I was watching SaabKyle review the C63S and I couldn’t help but notice something.

Kinja'd!!!

What are those weird plastic things on each side of the license plate? I looked up a picture of a Euro-spec coupe and those aren’t there.

Kinja'd!!!

I hate to say this because the C Coupe looks hot as fuck, but those little filler pieces remind me of a late 90s Malibu and how it had similar things.

Kinja'd!!!

Besides that, they seem a little unnecessary, no? What’s wrong with just having that empty space on each side of the plate? Unless the US has some stupid regulation on that.

Also I think the AMG GTS has them too.

US regs, not a US resident so could tell you why. Crash related I believe.

Yep. From the NHTSA:

“...This is equivalent to a 5 mph crash into a parked vehicle of the same weight. The standard requires protection in the region 16 to 20 inches above the road surface, and the manufacturer can provide the protection by any means it wants. For example, some vehicles do not have a solid bumper across the vehicle, but meet the standard by strategically placed bumper guards and corner guards."

Of course they have a stupid regulation.

They don't look like they're molded into the bumper, so I wonder if they could technically be removed...

‘Unless the US has some stupid regulation on that.’

I do believe you’ve answered your own question.

As mentioned, additional low speed crash protection.

Ah, 5mph crash regs. The same reason my 1983 BMW has a brick of aluminum on the front bumper the size of Rhode island.

It would be awesome if Mercedes cared so little about our dumb regulations like that one that they just glued them on and you could pull them off.

It’s really a shame, cause that is one cute butt.

I’ll take a couple of bumper warts over the EU pedestrian safety regs forcing the same basic shape on almost all cars.

Welp, European rear bumpers will be a common modification then.

Also the shot of the blue euro-spec car made me realize how terrible the visibility out of this C coupe will likely be. Those are some tiny-ass windows.
